On multiplayer servers, some people suffer of sync issue: unability to interact or fight, sudden death due to a monster far away, teleportation, damages on boats, and others effects.
The game is amazing thanks.

strykaNot sure if this falls under the same category, played the game yesterday in my buddies server 11 hours no problems at all aside from a few acceptable hiccups, launch the game today in the same server and chests can no longer be opened, regardless of locations (no wards either preventing me from opening said chests) was able to temporarily fix said chest glitch by building a wooden stool (i dont know) and after fixing that, doors were no longer able to be opened. none of my other buddies have had these issues, but several restarts didnt fix anything.

Dream WEaverDoes the person with said issues have an MSI computer? If so, check for Killer network software and if they have it - get them to uninstall that software

JinKuroneko :)I want to start with, this game is a freaking amazing. Great fucking job !
The game feels like single player/local if we far away from each other but when we start to reconvene, some of us will desync sometimes up to 1min delay. It's like everything he saw is 1min behind.
I assume the game try to update information between each other on what we have been doing, what items we have etc. -

Deus@Dream WEaver, No killer network software or other network "optimisation" software on my pc. I host the server on my computer. For my experience with 2 firiends we have some Sync issues but it is still playable but when we start to be more (4-6 players) we start having big sync issues more than 2 or 3 minutes differences. At first we have not dedicated server on my computer but private game, and we switch on dedicated to try resolving issue. Set static address ip, forward multiple port, try to be all in the same language, nothing has worked at the moment for us.

JakeWhen playing co-op my friend and I lose the ability to open chest or doors and animals will stand still taking no damage. The only way to fix this is to logout of the server and then log back into the server. Sound like the same issue?

up with itself. All of Player 3 actions during this period are discarded.
The same happens if a player hosts a server from the in game menu and we join him. If Player 3 joins he can have the same affect on the overall server.
It seems there needs to be some form of server side system that has the ability to deal with traditional client/server traffic especially where one of those clients might not have the best connectivity. I would assume such a system would time someone out on a short time out period if they were having an impact on the server as well as also deal with error/missed packets, there perhaps should be better resend/retry practices at the network level?
Anyway i wanted to put the effort in to trying to articulate my experience as i want to ensure you have the best possible chance of making this a huge success.

MeasurityTo the devs: I recommend looking into the reliability flag for steam P2P API. Not all data needs to be reliable (ex: movement, fast animations that do not impact gameplay, effects). This reduces the networking requirements and can help other data get through that is important.

drewfortyyyA friend and I playing on his dedicated server, both on late model rigs and 1gb connections, went 10+ hours with no sync issues, then the next day experienced sync issues up to 10 minutes or more between my action and his seeing it. Adding a third player further confirmed 2 in perfect sync and 1 player minutes behind, even with good latency. Issue seems especially intermittent.

BriabotMy boyfriend and another friend of mine have been playing on my world for about 30-ish days with no problem, bit of lag here and there but completely normal. But today, my bf tried joining and there's a massic desync and lag, he can't open doors or do anything but from my end he seems fine. We tried going on his server and same thing, I can't do anything.
It's odd because it was fine and now it's broken. It's really demotivating because we have already done so much on my world and this makes us not wanna play (not like we really can). -

VinchesterI played with my friend 4/5 days in a row for bout 15hours a day (Yes I know :D) Without ANY ISSUE, after Today's Patch, we got problems like, cannot picked up loot, chopped tree cannot be destroyed or reloging cuz of HUGE FPS drop rate after 1/2 hours of play, Most of thing's we built, never saved, we lost a lot of materials cuz of dis. Waiting for Fix.

Christopher RasmusBeen playing for the last couple days on a PC/server with no issues. 4 players, no lag, host has left his PC/server on for 10+ hours (i.e., go to bed with server on, wake up server still on, go to work server STILL on, etc.)
Today Feb 10, 2021 after game updated to latest patch latency/lag is spiking up to 60 seconds (e.g., click to open a door or chop a tree and 60 seconds later the door opens or the hit registers on the tree).
Additionally fps seems to have dropped from a usual 30+ down to 10-15.
What is going on?!
EDIT: When I first logon to someone else's PC/server, there are no landscape features (no trees, stumps, etc.) and no buildings for several, several seconds, then poof everything loads in. This has never happened before today (2/10/21). This doesn't happen in solo play. -

KaosFirst of all love the game (playing it solo) but would be even better to share this experience with friends, and there's the issue.
When I enter their server I see only meadow, no trees, no animals just nothing as far the eye can reach. Sometimes they do appear on my screen or after a minute or so I get thrown out (vice versa when they enter my server). First thought this would be an international connection problem but same thing within 30 km of my door. Tried fixing stuff on my own end but to no avail. When those friends try to connect with other people they don't seem to have a problem. -
11 Feb
VliekThis is caused by it being peer to peer and one of the players having a bad connection, from what I have experienced. We found out who causes it and every time he is close to us things start getting delayed, no item pickups, floating mobs.

EdgecrusherStarted to notice something wrong last night. I was noticing a lot of lag so I did a server restart (I am using pingperfect). I came back on and could not open a box at all. I relogged and came back to noticing my progress of the building I was making didn't save. I thought oh well must be an issue related with PingPerfect so I will just continue on. I completed the building and noticed I couldn't open a door. I relogged and the progress was gone on the building. Back to before. I put in a ticket and they wanted to wipe the progress and see if a reinstall of the files would fix the save issue. I told them no and found this issue here. I guess I will wait for a fix?

JeTYep desync issues for me and my buddies too. When playing with people from varying locations with high and low pings, we start to get bad lag where doors dont open, people aren't where they're supposed to be etc. Heard its an issue with the netcode. Please address this ASAP so we can play with our friends smoothly! :)

SubWhenever I joined my friend's session, I definitely joined his non-dedicated server. I could see his base, I could see him running around. After 10 seconds or so, it desyncs. I can see my friend moving and doing things, but for him, I am standing or running in place. On my end, I am moving in the world, but I lose ability to interact with doors, picking up items etc.
Then my friend set up a dedicated server, but there was the same issue. Since there was one more friend playing with him and everything was fine, we assumed problem was on my end. So I tried VPN and disabling my firewalls. It didn't help, always the same. I join, play for 10 seconds and then it desyncs.
>> Funny part is, I could take his bronze helmet from his server and I can transfer it to my singleplayer game and use it! When friend checked his storage on his server, bronze helmet was still there. Not sure if that was intended by developers. <<
Finally, we realized we are desyncing when we are close to eachother. -

MooseWhen playing multiplayer im having desync issues where my internet speed is being throttled from 250Mbs to 1 or less Mbs. Alex MergedSame issue here, on our 5 players dedicated in eastern north america, one of the players is connecting from china and during spikes of latency or unreliable transmissions, it makes it horrifying if we are in the same area. It sometimes recovers on its own, sometimes it doesn't and the queued actions get stuck until the china-bound player disconnects and reconnects.
If we are in separate areas everything is fine, however. -

PhixI'm hosting a dedicated private server for about 10-12 of my friends, 4 of them were having no issues at all and everything was fine. Myself (on LAN), and a couple of my other friends with me were having intermittent bouts of 30 second delays on swings, opening doors/chests, etc. We also had desync issues where one of the guys was somewhere else on his screen compared to where he was on my screen, and we were 'yoyo-ing'. Rebooting the server (restarted the PC, 12 core CPU with 16 GB RAM on SSD) didn't solve the issue either, however the other group kept working fine. Not sure what that was about, but it happened a couple times. Later in the night everything worked fine again for everyone. Tested my internet connection and it was fine during the problems as well.

take4spamOn dedicated server:
My friend can play normally, everything works, but when I play... I become invisible for him, things that i broke are not synced with him, resources I collect are still showing to him and so on. Sometimes I could not deal any damage to mobs and resources on world and I need to reconnect. And it feels like I'm half-disconnected. disconnected from server but still in the game with him. So I can see everything that my friend did or is doing. I saw him destroying things, I saw him building and so on, but when I tried, nothing. My friend saw me standing still or he wasn't even able to see me right in front of him. If I build, it didn't show for him and If I reconnected everything was gone. I even tried when he was not online and same thing.
We also have quite a powerful dedicated machine at OVH because we are also playing with tons of other games and we have no problems with them. I really wish a solution for this is found, I want to play this good game with a friend -

Finch! So far the biggest issues I've been having with desyncing is when sailing. I'm playing on a server with just myself and one other person and every time we sail, the waves have been delayed for me by a ton. The boat is either constantly floating or underwater and I have to stay seated on something or I'll start swimming and lose the boat. Luckily I haven't drowned to this issue yet but its still annoying.

SeiferTo help out the devs, I think everyone with these issues need to give a little more detail to help pin point what the issue is. Could people start posting the following:
Dedicated Server or Player Hosted
Operating system of Dedicated Server or Player Hosting
If Dedicated Server, is it running on a Virtual Machine?
How many players on when desync happens
Any other info is good but I think that is a start to hopefully see if there is a pattern. -

BelthizeI have a thread on the steam forums here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/892970/discussions/0/4939856028569039376/
It appears the client are *sending* data at 40KB/s or higher while receiving many 1s of KB/s. Normally the client only has to send key press type info so the transmit rate should be a fraction of the receive rate.
Unfortunately 40KB/s is very close to the transmit rate of DSL (15Mbit DSL typically has a 500-600kbit up limit). So some people are simply hitting a bandwidth limit at which point the queing system kicks in and other clients grind to a halt till the slow link catches up. -

GarbigoWhenever I join my friends server the desync stars kicking in. The weird thing is that desync only starts when I'm close to someone. When I'm far away from everyone everything seems to run fine. I can chop down trees and kill things. I'm the only person on the server who has these problems. I don't know how to fix this and it seems like I can't.

bloufalconplayed with 1 other member on player hosted server and dedicated server and noticed major lag/de-sync within a minute of joining. game was essentially unplayable. I did notice the "bad server connection" icon in the upper lefthand corner. playing on WiFi. moved my computer to a different part of the house (same room as router) and issue with sync was resolved. I was the "bad actor" in the multiplayer sync. thing is - I was getting fine performance (ooka test) with 100-300 Mbps up / down when in other room; experienced a few hiccups with the connection due to wifi not being 100% signal. looks like any hiccup in the connection that would cause packet loss sends the game into an unrecoverable and continuously degrading state of sync.
for all those out there experiencing sync issues, get on wired connection and see if sync issues still happen. played tonight for about 2 hrs with zero sync issues...only change was my connection (physically moving next to the router so wifi was 100%). -

HitTheMan MergedJust to push this out here for people regarding desync and lag and problems with the dedicated servers or multiplayer in general, here's how Multiplayer work in this game, a very good statement from Ori from discord:
"No. We're telling you what it is. The ONLY thing a dedicated server does in Valheim is keep the world open and accepting connections. It's literally the game client with no graphical interface, no character, only serving the world. It puts the players connecting in a peer to peer web. One person with a bad connection hurts the entire web causing desync. This server architecture can run on a potato because of this setup."
Dedicated servers doesn't mean better performance, just it being online 24/7 basically

Erikame and my boyfriend have been playing 5 days now, we didnt have major lag issues until 2 days ago. Our internet is fine, we closed every application, no performance issues on our desktops, we are on the same network and the lag is different for both of us. To the point we died and lost all our high level gear and almost dying again from taken damage of something we don't even see. The game is amazing but we havent been able to play properly the last two days now due to this lag.

EddyHaving the same issue. Just constant. It works great for around 20-40 seconds then players are teleporting everywhere, i'm unable to open chests if someone is nearby or pick up items. Just huge amounts of desync sometimes minutes in the past then will very suddenly catch up. Other players leaving will fix the issue but when the come back it only takes another 20 seconds and it's unplayable again.

LazLet me share details about my experience with desync.
+ I can confirm that items might duplicate or vanish when a desync occurs. If you are not sync'd and you pick up an item from a chest and relog, both your character and the chest will contain the item. If instead of picking up you deposit, the item will vanish.
+ A dedicated server did not help.
+ We noticed lag during a kind of garbage collection in the server and that might have triggered desyncs, but it's hard to isolate.
+ Not being able to interact with chests is a common symptom of desync, but you might still be able to do that while already desync. For example, once I had 50 wood on my character and 50 in a chest. I got all wood and built 2 stockpiles. After relogging, I didn't have any wood on me, the stockpiles were gone and 50 wood were still in the chest. -

mancheetDid some trouble shooting and I think I found a general solution to anyone experiencing network throttling while valheim is open. The issue seems to occur for anyone who has software that optimizes network traffic.
The example given in steam describes "Killer Network software (often found on MSI computers)" being the issue, and uninstalling it being a fix. I resolved the issue on my Lenovo Legion 5 by disabling Lenovo Vantage's Network Boost OR adding valheim.exe to the list of programs to prioritize.
In general to solve this issue, check if your computer has any software that attempts to optimize or prioritize game connections on your network. Disable it or add valheim.exe to the list of software to include in the prioritization as it is not included by default. -

AprilBoyfriend and I bought the game Feb. 12th, fell in love with it and decided to rent a server from GTXGaming. I haven't been experiencing any de-sync issues but my boyfriend has. 2 minutes after he would log into the server with me, his character would stop moving and he wouldn't be able to chop trees, loot chests or anything but he could keep getting levels in his skills. We tried multiple re-logs, restarts and reinstalling but nothing fixed the issue. Hopefully this is resolved soon so we can play together! We are absolutely loving the game, though..

doubledgedboardsimilar issues here, no core bottlenecking, no memory bottlenecking, no disk bottlenecking, and firewall ports are configured, and plenty of bandwidth available
dedicated server was running perfectly fine and then became desynced, where I'm unable to do anything (destroy objects, open chests, etc)
standing still, I randomly receive damage and get moved around every once in a while -

ArchdukeMDMe and my friends have over a hundred hours in the game after buying it 6 days ago. Everything was relatively fine in terms of server syncing but since a couple of days ago, it was borderline impossible to play the game anymore. Monsters were teleporting everywhere, interactions weren't... interacting, you name it. I dont know why, but the multiplayer has been desyncing like crazy which led us to ultimately stop playing the game. I hope this would be the priority fix cus we really like playing the game

DeusThe title is not rigorously exact, we are aware that desync occurs frequently (network latency, etc.), the actual problem being the failure to resync properly which leaves players with an inconsistent state.
TL;DR: After testing multiple scenarios, we found a pattern that seems to cause a persisting desynchronisation. It seems to occur when two players connect to the server from the same NATed connection, thus with the same public IP.
Test details:
Notes:
All computers were running Windows 10 without any network optimising software
Once one player desyncs, the game state becomes inconsistent for all players within a minute -

TaldrenA group of us have been playing since launch. There are 4 to 7 of us who play regularly. We average about 4 people online and have gone to 6-7. When at 3-4, things are relatively fine. If we are in the same area we may get minor desync. Last night, 6 of us took 3 boats and traveled north. We stopped in a few places to fight new enemies and the desync was unreal. Enemies walking through the air, teleporting, instant dying, it was awful. When we finally got away, we continued in our boats and everyone noticed terrain and coastlines weren't loading properly. In some cases they'd barely load until we were right next to them. Everyone experienced desync and loading issues.
We have played with a regular host, a dedicated server running on my PC, and two different dedicated server providers (g-portal and Citadel Servers).
Five of us are really close to each other on the East Coast (MD, VA, and PA) with one person in Austin, TX. -

GysonI have the fastest DSL package available to me through AT&T, and even when playing with just one other player my upload capacity is regularly being maxed out in Valheim.
Even when my character is doing nothing but walking around in the vicinity of another player, my Valheim client is attempting to upload data at a rate exceeding 50 kB/s. That should not be happening; that's far too much data even in extreme circumstances, much less for just moving my avatar 15 feet. Most DSL upload speeds can not push that amount of data, despite being more than capable for every other multiplayer game I've ever played. -

SafeThis is game is great and very fun to grind to but when it comes to playing with my friends (2+ players) I would have to stay far away from them for me to be insync with the server and the worst part is that I do not get to enojy boss fights with them as I would be 60+ seconds behind :(

MassiveLegOfHamHaving this exact issues with only 2 player co-op.
The two computers are in the same room. I've actually never seen this type of lag, it's almost like every action is being logged and it plays on the other computer scene by scene, but 1 minute behind. Not sure replication alone can do that, right?
Both windows 10.
Using the in-game server maker, not dedicated.

Michael AlbertoMy wife and I are trying to play this game. great game especially for an early release. issue is that we are playing on the same internet connection. when she logs in first she is able to play with any server she is interacting with. if I try to join same server I only get the base mesh loading in if anything. I get the not synced symbol. I try to join other servers and get the same issue. if she has been logged out for a short time then I can access other peoples servers. if she tries to interface with my single player game she does not get full resources loading in and desyncs pretty quick. and I cant join her single player world.
we are on a 100+ Mb connection down and on Win 10 gaming machines that where purchased last year. -

DaCoffeeManFirst day playing (2/10) everything was swell and no sync issues with two players on a Community Server. Heavy crafting as well as fighting, all good.
Second day of playing (2/11). Mainly fighting and adventuring, third player joins. All good, no sync issues.
Third day of playing (2/15). Heavy crafting, terrain manipulation, building for a few hours, sync issues start. All players experiencing 1min+ lag. Chests inaccessible to all but the host, players appearing in different spots on each person's screen. All players tried restarting the game, Steam, internet, computers, no change following each attempt. -

KulaMe and my friends had problem with saving world. Sometimes our structures have disappeared. We decieded to turn off steam cloud. Now we are saving world using command and we didn't had bug yet. Maybe there is some issue with steam cloud sync. Befor turning it off our world had this bug like 3 times. Now after 10h of new world nothing bad happend.

GoofyBootsI've been playing on a dedicated server hosted on Gportal. Game running on Windows 10, Ryzen 5, ASrock B450M mobo, 1660ti. No sync or lag issues until last night. Last night I was playing with my 3 friends (which is the norm) and I was getting such bad desync that enemies were teleporting around and items weren't dropping properly. We all live within 4 city blocks of each other. None of my friends were experiencing this issue, and my wife was playing on our home network as was I. No antivirus was running and my wired connection was getting 101mbps. I have a Google mesh system and my PC is configured on the network with a static IP utilizing the Google Mesh ethernet backhaul. I have no network optimization programs as some others have mentioned.

Grey WardHaving massive desync issues on my g-portal server. There are 4 people playing on the server and I'm the only one who has massive desync that is so bad it makes the game practically unplayable while other people are on. Also noticed it completely caps my internets upload speed which must be the issue. No game I've ever played has actually done that. I have Win10 and have checked for network optimization software like MSI, forwarded ports, restarted my router/server/computer.
My internet is great, my computer is great and can run this game single player 60-80 average fps, and the server is perfectly healthy.
I love the game but I haven't been able to play on my server a single time while other people are on in days. Super frustrating. -

Blake BatemanGuys.....PLEASE FIX THIS DESYNC PROBLEM! ITs ruining the game for me....
-

Blake Bateman Mergedguys this isn't just corelated with people who have DSL this is happening to everyone. They need to work on fixing the way the game communicates with servers and vice versa. It is causing massive lag through out the game. I have 100mb down and 20mb up and i am having this issue. Weirdest part was i have been playing with a buddy just fine for 3 days until last night. Woke up this morning and tried about takes 45 seconds to open a box interestingly enough once i open it and go back to it it opens fine. but whenever i go to another box to open for the first time takes 45 seconds. before last night i could spam open all of them with no issues. checked my connection his connection everything was fine. its definitely something with the game something recent.

EdPlaying with my wife on a dedicated server (G-portal), terrible desync, itll be ok for the first few mins and after that were getting about 1 to 2 mins of desync between actions.

NadoLOVE this game...but I cant play with my friends who have it. I'm running an msi with highspeed internet, and I cant even see the other players on my map, even when they've made it available to do so. They get no notice when I join their game. I cant affect the world when I'm in the game. If they join mine, they get similar issues. Sometimes I can see the names of animals but cant see them in others games. Is it distance to them related? I hope this gets fixed soon. No I am not running any killer network apps.

JojiI purchased a dedicated server to play with 4 friends. 3 of us logged in, couldn't play. Lag and rubber-banding everywhere. :-(
I'm crying for the money I gave. -

ValUltimately we need the game protocol to move away from p2p focus when you use a dedicated server and offload more to the server vs client to client syncing.

Dolac84As the only one connected to our dedicated server, with a stable 700MB/s down, 30MB/s up cable internet connection. I was in game and the server desynced within 3 minutes of me being on it alone, I popped open a CMD window on my PC and ran a -t ping to my hosted server's IP, the ping results were consistent around a 60ms average response time with no packets being dropped. I then ran a ping from within game to the same server, the only difference being pointed directly to the Valheim port, rather than just the server IP itself, and the ping response was over 4 minutes. Why would the ping directly to the server be only 60ms from a command line ping and the in game ping be over 4 minutes? If this was a ISP connection issue as we are all being led to believe, the ping responses would be closer to eachother.

Heshu MergedWe have a same issue with our friend that has worse internet connection usually when the lags started we asked him to relog and that helped sometimes, the issue got worse when we get around our camp or after we went throught portals
-

OgharBought the game day one. I have great internet, my friend has DSL. I learned how to make the dedicated server on my box. We played together for a few days, saw some sync issues, figured maybe it was me hosting the server. So after one night of playing with my friend, logging off early and having him on the server for another 4 hours, and waking up to those 4 hours of building erased because of sync issues. I went ahead and rented a G-Portal server. Figuring maybe it was the fact that I was hosting. This, to our dismay did not fix anything. So after 2 weeks of playing the game, finally other people have reported the sync issue, and we come to find out, simply its his DSL. Completely took the winds out of our sails, after 90 hours of game time, I no longer feel like playing, because it seems like building more stuff only makes it worse. And since my friend lives in an area where only DSL can be had. There's no point, but to wait for a fix. We really love this game, we have hope.

TimGame is just not playable via p2p for me. Massive desynch just started occurring on the 14th Feb. Previous day was fine.
-
17 Feb
DayneBeen playing multiplayer since we got it a week ago, no problems whatsoever until the 14th, when close together we would experience extreme desync, with the ping of the guest skyrocketing to 2 minutes. When we would separate to different areas using portals, desync would go away and ping would return to the normal of ~100 ms. We have tried everything from closing the game, restarting pc, rebooting modem/router, trying new worlds, new characters, but the problem persists. Our only 'workaround' seems to be separating to different areas then regrouping and hoping the ping is stable, if the ping starts skyrocketing then we would separate again.
-
17 Feb
ZaerkiIt appears the primary issue with desynchronization and lag boils down to the fact that this game operates as a p2p hub, as opposed to a standard client server model. I have heard mention that it may be possible to increase the amount of bandwidth that can be sent to other clients per second. This may help alleviate issues until a better model can be built for dedicated servers.
If anyone knows the argument to pass on the server to modify this behavior, it would be appreciated. -

LeeI have a gportal dedicated server. The lag is getting worse and unfortunately the game is becoming unplayable. Devs, you’ve made a brilliant game and a ton of money, please sort this issue out 1st

DenisUpwote this. I tried to play with my friend and desyncs are almost all the time. We tried to use Start server option on both PCs in game and I tried to setup dedicated server.
We have internet connection 100 Mb/s both for download and upload and have same ISP, we play other games normally without any lags and desync. (Terraria, Minecraft, No Man Sky, Starbound).
What I noticed - when we are fat away from each other it lags and desync less and when I move closer to my friend - desync start.
Please fix this issue. I can provide any additional info if needed. -

jakobI can play solo but when im trying to connect to the world of a friend, i just see the desync symbol and i disconnect from the server after 1 minute and 24 seconds and i dont see anything besides the ground. That means no grass, no trees, no structures, no players, nothing. ijust have the map on which im able to see other players but i dont see them but they can see me

DuckHey all, I found a reddit post that fixes this issue. It involves re-writing a DLL file to raise the "m_dataPerSec" limit. I'm hoping this could just be raised by the development team, but nonetheless it is temporarily fixable: https://www.reddit.com/r/valheim/comments/lkea78/valheim_dedicated_server_lag/gnooncb/

Sc0utyWe have the same problem, we built a small settlement and as soon as 5+ players are on the server it starts to lag, some players can't use doors properly and it takes a long time for items to be picked up.
The ping increases incredibly.
But as soon as you are further away and separated from the settlement/other players it works. -

ShimaI have terrible internet, so my friend hosts all games on their end. This always works, as my download is relatively fine, however, my upload is almost non-existent. Valheim's system just doesn't work for this situation. A feature to set an actual dedicated host would solve all of this for my particular situation, and perhaps some of the ones listed here. Game becomes unplayable after about the 20hr mark in a new world, once building pieces reach a certain number and you start a teleport network.
Hoping a fix or hosting feature are added soon so we can keep playing this amazing game :( -
19 Feb
NashI have tried a few things to solve the issue.
I was previously using my personal PC as a dedicated host, as more players joined I moved the world to a VM on AWS EC2. Everything was fine then all of a sudden after about 2-3days we experienced dysnc issues whenever we are close to eachother. I then moved world to another host (g-portal) to ensure it was not networking or hardware related. The same issue occurred. What I did notice is that the issue begins to occur once the world DB file reaches around 30-32MB. -

NicSame here, feels like i'm playing in the past, hitting ennemies but they don't even detect me, deer don't flee nor take damage or flee with 30s delay wihtout take damage, i see other players run on place or pace a very short distance compare to the quantity of running, enable to pick up anything (very common), or when i ask my friends on what their are doing they describe me something that i will see in the future if i follow their character so...
Yeah 2 of my buddies love the game as am i and the 4th in our group (playing a lot together, irl group) as discover it with all those bugs at first make it unplayble, and so wanna leave and get refund...
You really need to prioritze patching this, it makes the game unpleasant, a watse of time and unplayble. I honestly don't care much about more content sooner if the game stay in this bug synch multiplayer state, probably gonna desert it if it stays that way -

"The server is limiting the outbound bytes/seconds to each client. We had the same issues.
In the f2 menu when you are experiencing lag you will almost undoubtedly see the recv rate to be 64 kb/s or somewhere within a few kb but nothing over 64 since this is the server limit.
We modified our server to remove that limit (actually set it to somewhere in the 500kb/s range) and we no longer lag with 10 players connected all fighting the elder in the same area."

martinI'm not sure whether this is a sync-issue - at least it happened on a dedicated server in a multiplayer session - and something was clearly out of sync... I had several encounters with deers and Greydwarves which somehow reacted on me but seemed to exist in a parallel world. One Greydwarf went towards me but then levitated away without being able to get hit by any weapon. Another one followed me for several minutes while I was also not able to hit him someway. I experienced those issues only with 3 Greydwarves and one deer which appeared in my way and I went through it without interaction.

JefusRunning rented dedicated server though net4players with about 4-7 connected at any time, can confirm though testing that i can play solo on the dedicated for about 8 hours without even a bit of lag, dysnc or a stutter. we added each person into the mix one at a time and surprise surprise when the guy on a satellite link internet joins we get issues. When one bad connection joins the server all attached players are seeing
a) days skip at a rate of about 10 a time worst case it jumped from 260-280 in one night!
b) Usual complaints of not able to open chests doors ect unable to pick up loot
c) teleporting mobs ect
Lots of suggestion here to fix but allow me to make another one ... have the sever force disconnect the player when it detects desync? -
19 Feb
Johnb32xqLoving valheim but the desync does get bad with 10 people in one area, we did the first boss battle recently with a bunch of new players and the server desync made Eikthyr invisible for most of the group

SaboAfter a while, animals start to teleport or freeze. Items disappear, sink through the ground, and pop back up. Ships movements become stuttery.
Building blocks are starting to disappear as well, so constructing a base together becomes impossible. Btw, this often only affects certain people. -

PortalWe've noticed that since a recent patch the server is using more ram. The server has 4GB available, and when we played before the usage maxed out at around 2.3GB. Now when we all play the usage goes to the full 4GB and the server starts lagging like hell, nothing has really changed in our world, seems suspicious that it happend only after the latest patch.

FritzHas the latest update changed anything?
We played like 30h+ without any issues, we paused for a week and now after the update it is completely unplayable. -
20 Feb
Macabe4 People on server, I'm the host. Everyone is seeing what other people are doing 5 minutes after they do it.
What's odd is if you join my server, the desync is so bad that you would see what i was doing 4-5 minutes before you ever joined the server. I don't even know how the person joining would know what i was doing before they joined but my buddy gave me a play by play of what i was doing 5 minutes prior and never did sync up to what i was doing. It eventually got bad enough that i can't access any chests that they have accessed while online.
Completely unplayable with other people. -

ciknayI'm adding to the list of people who've had the same issues.
-Hosting on a linux server with plenty of bandwidth and not hitting any CPU/Memory bottlenecks
-have a 100/50 mb plan, so no issues with local speeds
-Sometimes it works fine, but if more people join the data being sent slows to a crawl
Even tried doing the DLL hack on client and server to increase the speed and that didn't work.
For now I'll swap back to local hosting until this gets fixed. I'm having a blast otherwise though. -

doryhello everyone ! i have for 3 days a new bug, an icon of usb at the top of the screen ! and always disconnected!! i play in coop with a friend and its really unplayable , i played only during 2 days normally at this game! now its a mess, devs say to all people that its their bad connection!! waouh its easy and not true ! this game is just made to play solo ! not finnished! uninstalled and forgot !

JessJust purchased this game after it being extremely recommended. Unfortunately I'm unable to to even play with a single friend as for less than a few moments without Desynx completely messing up the entire situations and making it completely unplayable with anyone, No matter if I was the hostess or if they were the host..
I am praying to keep this game for the purpose of multiplayer as it was an investment on my part for the future, as I would rather not have to refund it.. -
20 Feb
TRTnThis is the #1 thing to be sorted now, as the above person mentioned apparently that DLL setting has fixed it for many people. Our dedicated server hosting won't allow that file to be modified though. So we need the devs to fix it or we just cannot play together.
Cheers -

Sir SquirrelsalotWalls, chest and roofs will be placed for some people but not for others(often times disappearing when server is restarted). Chests will pretend they exist but nobody can open them. Item "ghosts" will appear on the ground for some people but not be grabbable.

I'm an AWS architect, your netcode needs fixin. You've seen the success of this title, 3 million Vikings deserve reliable server play. Check the pipes and go back to the drawing board if needed. Just pick up what other game companies did for their netcode, Ark, Rust and others work. You got this. -

KarulMe and friend have been having same problems as most. My internet is poor but can handle every other game I have ever played. We tried friend hosting but it was totally unplayable whenever I joined. Rented server yesterday from g-portal hoping it would help but really didn't, even made it worse and friend lost all his gear yesterday when he died during lag and grave did not spawn. I have been using 4g hotspot instead now and it gives better connection but seriously 4hours of gameplay and nearly 1gb of data used mean that not going to be cost effective in long run.
Game is amazing for sure but the multiplayer issue is real problem. Early access so need to be patient :( -
20 Feb
BenStarted this game on a dedicated server through G-Portal since Nitrado's servers for it are terrible. Played for days with friends without any issues whatsoever. After about a week we noticed some bugs starting to appear (Mainly Desync). At that point everyday after we played it got progressively worse to the point were i just now quit playing. This deeply saddens me due to the fact i REALLY loved this game. Its so terrible now it's game breaking, We can't drive a boat, We hit a mob only to see the damage actually dealt up to 3-5minutes later. Slide of boats randomly, Can't open doors, Chests etc.. Restarting did fix this but now it only does for maybe 5 minutes until tonight when restarts would destroy our structures and so on. We actually came back to an entire base in ruin, Only few pieces left. All the chests were there except the 1 most important that stored all my hard earned equips.. I can't do it anymore until this is fixed. Please fix this!

Adam CDesync problem is almost the saddest thing of 2021 for me so far, because this game is a beautiful piece of art that I can't even admire.
Windows 10 Pro machine with no hardware issues is the host and is also one of the players. Only other player is 2 hours away geographically, Windows 10, pretty hearty machine. Our ISPs are never truly "stable" but the host (and player) is having the biggest problem with desync, using loopback (127.0.0.1) to connect. I shouldn't be having -ANY- network issues.
If there's anything else I can contribute to help resolve this issue in any way, please contact me. -

LucasAlso noticed it in our server which frequents 6 - 8 people and rotating players.

JamesMy and my cousin recently purchased the game on Feb 17th. We both live in different states in USA. Since Feb 17th, We have been unable to play together (the purpose of us getting the game) because of delay times. When he creates the Community Server in game, I would jump next to him and he sees me jump just fine. But when he jumps or chops wood or in combat, it would be about 2-3 min delay on my screen and i would end up dying in combat. When I create the Community Server in game, the same things happens but its opposite. Either way, any building we do, Combat relative, picking up items is a long delay which makes it unplayable. So then Feb 19th, I purchased a Dedicated server through G-Portal and nothing was fix. Same issues every time and every moment we play together.
I surely hope the Devs can resolve this soon as we love the game and what it brings.. Please sort this out soon!!
Note: I tried the Valheim Dedicated Server option in Stream Tools and opens all ports... No Fix. -

SonokPlease fix this. It is makinig the game unplayable unless I play as single player. This I have a dedicated server by 3rd party hosting service. I can play all day but once a second person gets on neither of us can interact with anything.

KhellamendraPretty sure this is related to my issue as I saw some other people had the same thing. A buddy and I were playing together with sync issues. I created a chest, filled it up with all my important stuff because we were about to hit up a dungeon. Buddy opens it while I'm standing nearby to look for crafting stuff and it straight up disappears. Lost everything in it.

Londroth MergedWe've been have lag and randomly disappearing items over the last couple of days. I opened up a support ticket with the server host and this was their response.
"The back end server looks to be fine currently. We have noticed there seems to be a bug with the net code the servers use that has to be updated by the developer in order to correct things. It seems the server is using sort of a peer to peer system which if someone has a bad connection or bugs it pushes it out to the server and everyone else. Which can cause the issues you are seeing."
Not saying this is the answer to the problems we seem to be having, but if there is something to it, maybe it can be looked at by the devs. -

MotoFckr9kThis even happens on local server. If I run a dedicated server on the same machine as I am playing on, I still become unable to interact with some stuff. I have another player join that server over the internet and for both of us the issue comes an goes.
Some people talk about huge bases and stuff, but we literally had the game be unplayable right from the start. I only started a dedicated server to try if it clears the issue. It does *seem* like it makes it better.
Didn't try it myself, but a user on reddit posted a hack that supposedly fixed the problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/valheim/comments/lkea78/valheim_dedicated_server_lag/gnooncb/ -

desync is insane -
21 Feb
KurganSimilar issue here. But it's restricted to when there are more than 4 players in on the server. With 4 players everything is mostly fine. Small desyncs in our town we built, but totally playable. As soon as a 5th player comes into the map area everything desyncs, doors, chests, enemies, etc. Floating, and reappearing, and or unable to be interacted with. Plenty of bandwidth, as my dedicated server has a 16gb of ram and a Ryzen 7 cpu with a gigabit connection.

SaebianToday was a nightmare for the desync. Cannot open boxes, fighting in a duo with friend and enemies that appear to me don't appear for him. Eventually game catches up but easily gets out of sync again. We had to call it quits as it was causing too many deaths. Definitely a game breaker if its not fixed soon. WE LOVE this game.. taking our time and just found 3rd boss. Hope this gets fixed soon.

CDarkmoonBeen having major de-sync issues but found that disabling Razor Cortex game boost function before startikg the game helps a lot.
-
22 Feb
SubsOptimal MergedI have experienced item loss due to desync when my local connection began having issues. You put an item in the chest, but the server never receives that info thus, it is lost forever. This is definitely a networking problem that can break the game for a fair number of users. There is a high potential for abuse when considering open community servers. Players could potentially exploit this weakness to harass others on the same server.
-
22 Feb
Sessrumnirafter a few days with the game and mostly multiplayer experience, id be happy to detail my info:
When playing near other players, desync occurs depending on the volume of data being synced, combat seems to be the worst, player movement causes some, other events are hard to tell past that. the delay in communication from the server according to the ping command i have seen as high as 78000ms, where it returned to normal afterwards for me. the others were unaffected. it seems to happen to players with less than a certain quality of internet, (<100Mbps) as we can confirm the other player causes sever lag and desync in proximity. does not effect building though
As long as no players are adjacent (within the minimap seems about correct) there are no issues observed in movement of any players, or entities.
Internet, 20Mbps down, 5Mbps up, can play Call of duty and Path of exile online with only minor hiccups, firewall and router port forwarding set. Dedicated and peer-to-peer servers -

WhiskeyJackDesync issues since last update:
Dedicated Server
Ubuntu 20.10 (yeah, I know, I should have went with LTS release. Wasn't thinking)
Physical Server:
AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor
32GB RAM
1TB 7200 rpm spindle drive (yeah, too cheap for SSD on this box)
Internet Connection: Comcast 1000M service
- Typically 894Mbs down, 41Mbs up
Desync has happened when we've had two people, as well as up to five players. We noticed that portal usage seems to exacerbates the issue, at least when we've had two people online. Pings are anywhere from 20ms to 70ms per player, with no noticeable packet loss. I know, ping really isn't much to go on, but at least it's something.
We have also noticed the Desync occur when one of our players was experiencing high latency from their end.
As others have stated, these desync issues seemed to occur since the last update. We had not experienced this issue prior to the update that occurred around the 19th of February. -
22 Feb
DiegoHello, first off the game is amazing!
I've had similar issues playing on dedicated server, severe lag watching friends past actions and not being able to interact with chests, doors or enemies, I get hit from far, I hit them and they don't take damage, maybe because I'm not looking at their current location. Also I walk over resources and they don't pick up. -
22 Feb
JalineWe have a friend hosting on a dedicated physical server. As soon as we have more than five people in an area, the game starts desyncing. We can't open chests, pick up items, or even sail properly. However, we can have mine people online, and half of them in one encampment and the other half across the ocean in another, and we are mostly fine.
We also verified that the same issue was happening on a player hosted world.
Please fix! We love this game, but this makes it really hard to play with friends. -
22 Feb
IppeUntil the desync issue is fixed, this game is unplayable. Hosting a dedicated server because of this is a nightmare.

DolapexSame issue, world.DB files size is 50MB !, i have a Dedicated paid host and the dysnc issue is horrible. :/ !
-
22 Feb
RenofZeldaYes this should be number one priority for Valheim at the moment. Literally can not play with friends when in the same area as them. Makes playing multiplayer completely broken. This is a fantastic game but this is game breaking and needs to be fixed before players leave of frustration of not being able to play together. We are playing on a dedicated gportal server and the minute I log out my friend stops lagging. So there is definitely peer-to-peer connection going on. They need to fix this asap.
-
22 Feb
Corey MyersIncreasing the upload limit on the server seems to address this issue. 64kb/s is not enough bandwidth for more than 4 people on a server. You guys need to have this value scale up the more people join the server.

DavidStill a huge problem for me and my friend. Im running really good internett and a decent PC. First 2 days me and my friend played in was perfect, not a single issue ever. Now for 2-3 days in a row the game is completely unplayable for hours. It changes between me and him beeing unable to interact with the world, mobs not loading properly, etc. I made a run for 30 minutes just to explore the map since trees weren't loading. Pleeeease fix this issue. There is a big problem here.

didyouexpectthatIs this the experience when a random boar will be standing around and then disappear? This happened a lot when we were in burial chambers... but other times we've had random deer standing around. And only 1 character can see it. Can't attack it... but everyone can hear it. Or you die but suddenly you're riding piggyback on a Draugr in the swamp unable to move... so restart the game and you spawn right where the Draugr walked back to which is its nest? It's not unplayable for us, just something weird we've had to get used to if we're not being attacked lol. My internet is gigabit down and 40 mbps up. I have custom network hardware and both parties are connected via same ISP so I am not sure if this is because of latent packets going from host to clients, or if this is just worse for people with slower networks.

KotThe synchronization problem is THE SOLUTION.
Problem Description:
When connecting to the server, after a while(1-2 minutes) I stopped picking up items, couldn't interact with chests, cut down trees, and so on. I saw other players running around, but they didn't see me, or they saw me hanging in place.
After a long search, the solution was found.
Run the command prompt as an administrator.
Enter the command:
netsh ipv4 interface show subinterfaces
Find your active connection to the Internet.
In my case, it was Ethernet 3.
Run the command:
netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Ethernet 3" mtu=1024 store=persistent
Enter the name of your active Internet connection in quotation marks.
According to the standard mtu=1500

maddudayIn my world, i was in the mountains building another base and when my cousin hopped in my world at the black forest, he was organizing the base, a troll appeared so I took the portal back to where he was then both of us started lagging. I ported back to the mountains and the lag stopped. He ended up leaving the game cause it became unplayable on his end :(

RagnarHaving the same issue. Distance from each other's players help stop desyncing momentarily, but continues once we are close. Restarting the game for both does not help. We suspect that this is caused by the drop in internet speed by one of us and the game can't seem to catch up to the other player anymore. In fact my friend lost most of his slightly hard earned gear when he tried to swim to my boat. He died several times since and we couldn't recover his items anymore.

JayFor my family of three we initially had the desynching issues with my wife's computer hosting. We installed the headless server on a computer we use as a dedicated game server. My wife and son desynch on rare occassion, but I can't stay synched for more than 5 minutes if I'm lucky and many times load into the game already desynched, making it unplayable for me. I've tried hours worth of troubleshooting, updated every driver, looked for some sort of culprit software, but I can't find anything. Ironically, my computer is the newest, purchased from Lenovo last December with 10th Gen Core I7 and GEFORCE RTX. I'm really hoping for a fix from Iron Gate. I think I could truly love the game, but would have to be able to play it first, rather than spend what little leisure time I have continually troubleshooting while my wife and son play.

DeaknProbably has been mentioned before, but servers also suffer severe lag once you build a small base and even worse depending on the amount of terraforming done.
Singleplayer isn't suffering anything so far.

Miljan AnicNot sure if it's due to desync bc we are really happy with the performance since we raised the cap for sending/receiving data (by factor 10x) but we have lost (!) 2-3 portals over the last 7 days. They just disappeared. Same things happened with single build elements like parts of walls or stone bricks (which didn't hurt that much).

b00gnishMy friends & I are having the same rubber banding/desync issues as many other players. In our case, it tends to happen most during combat (more enemies= worse desync) and in camps with larger buildings. We've had no issues so far in smaller camps or when no enemies are present.

TaylorFriend 1 (host), friend 2 (client), myself are in this story. All three go fighting or adventuring in close proximity (distance of the minimap). After some fights, I become haunted by a deer. The deer is immortal to me and doesn't run away. No one else can see it.
Later after some fights, friend 2 becomes haunted by Draugher. Terrifying. Friend 1 and I can't see it. It just follows friend 2 around.
We assumed it was client issues only until about 2 hours later, friend 1 complained about an invincible greyling.
Don't know if we still have the logs for that session or if we even have access to those logs.
I do like the idea of the players becoming haunted by the things they fight though. "It's a feature, not a bug." Haha -

MaraninoHere are all the conditions I have noticed for multiplayer latency issues. It runs smooth as butter when I am alone on the dedicated server.
1. The moment my friend joins who happen to live closer to where the server is actually located, the "desync" begins.
2. If I move further away (in-game) from my friend it is noticeably smoother than when I am near them but not as smooth as when they are not there.
3. If I am near 1 or more players crazy things begin to happen. They fly through walls. If they access a box nearby I cant open a door nearby or a different box nearby. Enemies desync and teleport attack you then disappear and you take delayed damage.
Only two things come to mind when I think about this issue.
1. Your server might be multithreaded but it's not running a dedicated server with that in mind.
2. The netcode of the game is broadcasting ALL events in the game ALL the time to EVERYONE.
(this is a common mistake made by developers of many Alpha build games) -

Ash CobbI am playing with a friend for around 60 hours of gameplay now. We've just started work on our new stone building and want to build a kickass castle but when I'm placing items, they're not able to be destroyed by me and cannot be seen by my friend. The materials however, disappear as if the item has in fact been built.
Given this has happened two days in a row when we've tried to build, the game is currently unplayable. -

XadienxSteamCMD // P2P API/Code is horrible choice to base this game Multiplayer on.
I would suggest Hiring a Strike team and more lead networking people possiably to build your own backend networking for dedicated servers//Hosting or copy another successful companies Code up to the Legal Limit and build on it.
Valheim is great, lots of room for improvements, but these Desync/Networking issues could ruin what quick success you have achieved.
Tons of UPLOADING being used for simple item placement now multiply that person in 1 base , becomes total clusted F.
Best of luck to figuring this out and hopefully soon before Valheim Gets branded as a desync meme (similiar to no mans sky launch which no one returned to that game even when things got fixed/newcontent ) -

Charlie King MergedI've been playing for three days now, playing on different friend(s)' servers, today we decided to rent a server and I face the same issue I had before.
I can play the game fine however to the people in my server I am frozen, this happens within a couple minutes of joining the server every time. I can do anything however I'm assuming what ever I do from the point onwards from being frozen doesn't get saved or processed what so ever.
For instance, If I put an item in a chest / furnace or anything at all I will lose it, gone completely however If it is in my inventory then the item will stay.
Any ideas?
I play on a tethered mobile hotspot, I have no issues on any other games whatsoever. -

LePunkIt seems that this issue only happens if the ping is above 36ms, anyone else noticed something like that?
-
24 Feb
HechiceraI rented a dedicated server and saw this eventually and ran some tests. It seemed, in our case, to be an engine limitation with the number of items within draw distance. There were three of us and all are “builders”. With one medium and two small structures within draw distance all was well. Then we started building. With four large, two medium and three small structures, plus palisades and covered workbenches around lag was about 30 seconds from load in to ability to open a door. There were desync issues, fixable by server restart. Like others, remote areas out of draw distance accessed by portal were fine.
So we experimented with removal. We went down to two large, and two medium structures within the draw distance with palisades and many small workstations. After server restart the issues were resolved.
Next we’ll test the same number of structures in the save, but spread outside view distance. As it is unclear from this if whole save of just that area that was the problem. -

Toasted_TuckEnjoying this game a lot but I am having the same issue. Single player is fine, no problems whatsoever. As soon as we launch a multiplayer server it goes to hell. Desync effects everyone in my game. We have tried getting different people to host and even played on a dedicated server but nothing seems to fix it. Doors won't open, chests won't open, hits won't register, animals and monsters will teleport around and we will die randomly when nothing is near us on screen. The latest problem was my brother loaded into game with some copper ore on him, as soon as he got there he placed a chest and put it all in there. Desync started going crazy bad so I tried restarting the server and when we got back in, everything we did from the time he joined was gone. Lost over 100 pieces of copper ore. I'm sure you can understand how frustrating that is because how hard that is to mine. Even tried /ipconfig flushdns. NOTHING WORKS. Please fix these issues as we want to play this game more.

SimonI don't have the greatest net connection but I do notice when monitoring my network usage that my upload is usually at about 400kb while download is low to non existent, this is occurring when I cannot open a chest or interact with something. I know my net is not the greatest but there has to be a server side issue with that sort of communication flow

JinkisOne of us has an unstable internet connection so we assumed the many issues (boats being damaged, unresponsive objects etc..) was caused by that, but it appears that this could be an issue inherent to the game itself as other peer-to-peer games we play have more typical infrequent lower latency desync issues (typical lag of >500ms) whilst this has unusually frequent and high latency desync (<500ms - >45,000ms) - and other hosts still caused this same issue for us. From our limited testing, this issue is present in new worlds, but far more likely to occur once we play for around 15hrs, perhaps due to worldsize? At that point the world is occasionally bare and objects stream in very slowly when joining the server. That's all I can do to help.
This is easily one of our favourite games in the last decade so I really wish you all the best with fixing this vital issue, we have been forced to stop playing most days but try to every day as a result. -

ddblue0I play on a dedicated server with 6-8 friends. Everything has been great up until tonight, when only 2 of us were on building a house. Suddenly I couldn't open or close doors. Turns out it's a big desync problem, and nothing I do fixes it. The suggested ports were already forwarded, and I don't have a Lenovo or any special internet apps. We love the game, and it really sucks putting so much time into it (57 hours for me) only to suddenly become unable to play with no fix in sight. Please help.

Jose GarciaI initially got the game on February 23rd with one other friend. We didn’t play much just because it was late but the experience was awesome & we loved it. Super fun even in the short amount of time we played. We decided to play again the next day & probably an hour into the session we were having major issues with the lag & syncing games. It wasn’t my internet or his because we were both able to use Chrome & other applications while playing just fine. Made the game unplayable because we would try to build a house but I would place floor boards that he didn’t see at the time & then he would do the same & it was a mess trying to build it. Also when it came to fighting some monsters in the forests he didn’t see the one that I saw & it killed him. Had to stop playing the game for the day just because we couldn’t have fun like the first day.

Cory WallaceOur server is experiencing a slew of bugs since the most recent patch:
Moving throughout the world, whenever you're entering an area that must be generated (Trees, shrubs, rocks, resources, mobs, etc) Nothing generates, or sometimes only the trees do.
Lag spikes are causing issues like being unable to open any containers
Lag spikes are causing issues with boating. Upon travel, lag spikes will cause either the boat to sink or wind up in mid-air. Some players see themselves on the boat, some see themselves in the ocean, Some players on our server report no issues with the boat in these instances, yet players can be seen drifting off of the boat. After this occurrence, the boat becomes unusable, and we must restart our server to get the game to work
Server lag has actually gotten worse since the patch -

LauraPlaying on server with friends (them hosting) been playing for a week or so no problem. After the update the other day had some issues. I went off sailing/exploring for 1-1.5 hours. Built a portal on an island and sailed back - none of my friends could see me/I could not see them. Thought it was lag so we backed out/restarted server. The boat had disappeared, we took another boat and backtracked to where I placed my portal and it wasn't there. Game registered materials used so we lost that, but both the boat and portal I crafted are gone.

Checked with internet provider, lowered settings, fps is running solid, nothings seems to work

KidoFYI: One fix I found is the following:
There is a hard limit on the upload rate of the server and with multiples clients this is often maxed out (you can see those rates with teh in game F2 menu).
You can change it by de-compiling (with a DotNet disassembler) the server side assembly_valheim.dll, then patching ZDOMAN::m_dataPerSec to a higher value, up from 56kb/s, finally recompiling it and deploying it to you server files helped mitigating some of the multiplayer sync issues we were facing on our dedicated server.
I wish this value was 10x higher by default for the dedicated servers.
Doing this patch at every update is kind of a hassle.
@Devs: can you experiment with this change and make it go production if you agree it helps, thanks.

GraphlingMy wife and I played easily hundreds of hours from its initial release with basically no sync errors or disconnects. We've never build any wards as I host the game on my computer and it's just us playing. After the patch where "back-end sockets" were adjusted, my wife constantly has sinc issues after about 10 minutes of playing. Logging out and reconnecting does not fix the issue. Usually after 5 to 10 minutes chests and doors won't open for her, my position isn't updated on her screen, and the game won't log her correct location when she exits. We lost 20 iron today when she pulled it from a chest and then wasn't able to use it. Even as the host, I used a portal to return to our main base and found that I couldn't open any chests or doors. In short, the game is now functionally unplayable for us as a multiplayer game. On a side note: where did the Feedback button go on the splash screen?

Jason G3 players on a dedicated IP Address world we set up.... also happens on our own private worlds when we turn on the "Server" setting
We have lost 3 boats now to the De-sync item.... When all of us log in, the issues do not happen right away.... but after some time... we will start to notice that one of us "Appears" stuck on the map...
when we are not...or someone is stuck in a certain pose... but to that "stuck" player that... person does not realize it. -

MikePlaying within the same household, ie different steam accounts, same ip address, seems to be an issue. Can play individually with 3rd party worlds (we individually play with friends outside the household), but desyncing, poor connection and disconnection issues occur when playing within same IP address (playing with each other) or when 2 or more players from the same IP address attempt to join a 3rd party world (2 of us try to join a friend at the same time).

joehey guys want to just let you know about a strange issue it seems like a desync issue
we have a dedicate server we normally play with 4-5 people randomly the game makes us not be able to to open doors, open chests, pickup items ect
except for one person that person seems to be able to do everything expect for kill monsters or hit trees or objects
anyone else on the server cannot see them moving around either
but when they log off everything goes back to normal
this one person seems random
we have 3 computers in the same house and one of them could be the person that seems to be able to open the doors and everything
or that person can be a few states away in the same house as the server itself
they can log back in and the server seems fine for awhile.
great game so far I look forward to the future updates -

Ps: We are all 4 in the sam hous with ADSL internet... But works fine in Raft -

SnookleCurrently unplayable on our dedicated server. It desyncs so badly that anything we build, say or do cannot be seen by peers. Randomly floating on each others screens, or sinking into the ground, and has resulted in loss of many items as chest deposits keep disappearing.
I am really addicted to this game, and it's paintul not being able to play it because of how bad it is, but I cannot bring myself to risk wasting hours doing something with the huge risk of it being nullified through desync. -

AmandaI want to say this game is incredible and highly addictive lol it’s taken me away from ffxiv which I’ve played for 7 years. This is the only game in 7 years that has actually kept my complete attention for hours per day so I really hope the devs make the lag issues when playing with multiple friends on on server their top focus. I feel like if this issues is not resolved fairly quickly the game player base will decline. There have been times when we are finding it impossible to play with more then 3 people together. Flying tamed pigs, mobs not being killed because lag, not being able to loot things or open chests. Crossing my fingers that this gets sorted sooner than later so we can continue to have fun.

BergSpent an hour building up a house on a dedicated server. Wanted to sleep as I ran out of wood and wanted to chop more by daylight. Couldn't sleep because a copy of me was connected... logged out to fix the desync, and logged back into my old house, with a troll I'd defeated before building the giant house smashing up my old tiny house... I ran out of arrows, died, and woke up at the start location... worse, the dupe version of me is still logged in.

JasonMy wife, son, and I have been playing on a dedicated server that is hosted on a well spec'd tower connected to the router via ethernet. We're all on laptops connected via wifi. We have been playing basically everyday in this manner since 2/13. However, after the 0.146.8 and 0.146.11 updates we are unable to play together. If one person is connected they more or less don't have issues and can play. As soon as one other person connects the ping to the server spikes and holds (again local connections, not going out to the internet and back in) and the local / remote quality drops from 100% and never recovers. You typically can't pick up items from the ground, but can sometimes take from chests, however once the server is restarted the items in the chest reappear, as well as remain in your inventory and duplicate. I moved the world save to my laptop and hosted myself and they connected through steam, but the same issue occurred. Also impacts our internet connection when this occurs.

NissusSeems like lots of people are having the same problem as me. I rented a dedicated server and have been playing on it with 3 others for a week or two with no D/C issues, some occasional lag, but nothing major and it soon resolved itself. But since the latest update (that was mean't to fix the desync issues that I suppose other people were having) the game has become up-playable. Disconnects occur quite regularly, with no obvious link to an action or set of circumstances. Having put over 100 hours in to the game I can say its damn good, but it appears to me that whatever was done in the last update has well and truly wrecked it for us right now. These disconnects happen in brand new worlds as well as our very established one. A real shame and I hope you manage to sort it out because I cant wait for this game to get more content. Bravo to the devs on the game in general it's very very good.

ZXThis game is easily on my top 10 best games I've ever played. I really hope the connection issues are fixed soon. It's crazy how much data is used. It's going as high as 120kb/sec for both DL and UL (you can see these stats with F2 for those who didn't know). I run a dedicated server where sometimes 8 of us are on with a 500mbit upload connection with everyone else having a relatively fast Internet speed. Despite that, it didn't take long for issues to arise to where it's essentially impossible to play. It seems to be worse when players are near each other. The newest updates may have made it even worse or maybe our world was corrupted because it's noticeable in other areas. Anyway, I imagine this issue is the current focus, but we're all hoping to return to playing again soon! :D

AmezarakGame has been a lot of fun! Me and my wife were able to play co-op just fine back around Feb 21. Using local server on my fairly powerful system. Now as of Feb 26th we have massive desync issues. Unable to open chests. Both of us appearing frozen to each other.
Sure we have DSL internet. But, we're literally sitting 6 feet apart on the same hardwired LAN. Why can't this use a LAN based server setup? Makes no sense. We can play many other co-op games that are far more demanding of our PC's with no issue.
Please consider adding a LAN based multiplayer option. -

Jason Piercenetwork admin who plays games. the problem does not appear to come from a latency perspective. folks on the servers i help with are having the same issues regardless of a 20 or 180 ping or location close or far away. chests sometimes not opening, animals or mobs that dont move or are gone and the nametag stays in the air, to items on the ground that cant be picked up. from other players perspective it appears people are walking in place, going in circles or just not moving, even though they are. this only started happening badly recently after the latest 'fixes'. the dedicated servers are good and on fiber connections. players all having same issues at the same time. some have stated it has started happening to them even in single player now. something is definitely up and its not just all a 'msi or network optimizing problem'.

capital0Was loving this game up until the latest patch. Now I can't seem to stay connected to my dedicated servers. Using the in-game monitoring (F2) I will have 100% connection quality and a sub 50ms ping, and then just stop receiving data. During this time, the actual server will continue responding to ping requests. The server logs show the message connection reset by peer.

JohnSince the 0.146.8 patch, my wife has experienced desyncing issues with a local network. We have tried dedicated and client servers. Also does not matter if she is the host or if I am. Either her game loads with a blank world without trees or buildings, or a few minutes into play, she cannot interact with the world. The 0.146.11 patch did not help this issue.

FrostyGyson: Have you found a solution to your problem? I am experiencing the *exact* same thing, including the attempt to upload the data. At first, the issue didn't happen for a week; then it started about every hour; then it quickly became 20-30 minutes, and now the upload bandwidth ramp up is happening about every 90 seconds. It is generally making the game unplayable in multiplayer at this point. When the issue happens, all my online services are shut off, and the only way to fix the problem is to shut down Valheim and restart. It is a testament to the enjoyment I am getting out of that 90 seconds of play time that I am still trying to get some more play time out of it, but I am at my breaking limit. I would love to know if any of the developers are aware of this bug, and if they are doing anything about it.

FluffyBunnyGreat Game!
However, Since latest update, released 26/02/21 I have received an extremely persistent bug, that if abused can easily duplicate any item.
The bug:
At any random time after login on a dedicated server between 1 - 20 mins the server will decide to no longer continue saving your placed (built or stored) items infinitely until user leaves and re-enters server. Extreme frustration while trying to base build as your buildings all disappear after relogging as well as no resource refund.
Duplication happens when items inside the storage are removed, but left on player. After relogging into server said items stay in users inventory, while the storage is reset to last save.
The failure to save without warming has lately been happening between 1-10 mins. recognized by having to consistently relog which is a huge hassle, meanwhile your buildings are still not saving, making the game unplayable!!
FYI: I am using the ESC, logout option, and NOT an incorrect termination method -

BobWhat a great game, but I experience the same problem than FluffyBunny (except duplication) since release 0.146.11.
The server is on a friend's PC, all other friends have no issues with fiber (exept when I'm close to them in the game, it can cause this desync problem).
I have a DSL connection but it's enough for multi gaming or VoD etc. -

Matthew AlexanderLove the game but after the last update the de-sync issues seem to have gotten worse.
Running a dedicated server sometimes other players are 30s out of sync. When loading in the area is empty then slowly spawns in now. Some of our players can’t open chests while others can. Animals seem stuck and unkillable and the world seems more laggy since the last update -

SkaftholuI have now rebuilt part of my house 6 times because of this issue, and every time it happens the resources I consumed during the rebuild stay gone. I've eaten up hundreds of units of wood just trying to build a few chests. I've mined out the boulder next to my house more times than I can count, and my friends have even donated some Surtring cores to help me build a smelter and charcoal furnace so I can avoid going back to lag city/our communal camp. I really like this game and would like to keep playing it, but I'm getting really irritated by having all my items and resources get deleted because of an unnoticeable desync. I'm going to clear cut the whole damn forest near my house and have nothing to show for it at this rate. Please please address this. It's killing all my enjoyment.

Mitch BFluffyBunny +1. That is almost the exact same issue we are having. Weirdly enough it seems to happen more frequently with some players on our server than others. Either way it makes the game basically unplayable since progress isn't saved for people... Everyone is playing single player until this gets fixed.

A. NerynAbsolutely adore the game but much like other people here I've experienced the desync issues becoming worse after the latest update, me and my boyfriend play together and we had never even heard of the dedicated server using instead the create server option, desync issues that would earlier be unable to open doors or chests and would take a few minutes of patience to fix now have turned into frozen characters with no end in sight.

MicyevelLove the game! Same issue here. On a dedicated server hosted on same PC i'm playing on. Can't open boxes, damage not registered, etc. Only fix is to run the server non dedicated. Thanks again for this game!

KaltinrilWe are using the new public value, which forces us to use the connect via IP, and the network lag for multiplayer is still horrible.

Derek M.When logging into my friend's server I frequently have characters frozen, enemies frozen, interactions wont work( open doors, open chests, pick up loot) Sometimes the game will sync when I log out and log back in, but only for a minute or so.

sean fultonas of March 4, 2021, 2:16 AM central time the connection issue still persists. connecting to my friends game that he hosts is fine, able to play fine for a time, then my entire home network is killed and i desync, kicking both of us off the internet. still unable to find the source of the network disconnection issue.

ColdBlakeHello! Game is great but can't play it due to the same desync issues. After a few minutes it happens and I've lost boats, building progress etc. Once the desync starts everything rolls back. I eagerly await the fix I know you guys are working on! Thanks for your efforts thus far!

BrendanHave also experienced desync issues. Had a LAN with my buddies and we noticed that he could not see me when our avatars were standing next to each other in game. He could also not see items I dropped. I've experienced other odd issues like removing contents from chests, and dropping them to give to another player, then later on those same items were still in my chest. Also experienced where I had ore in my smelter and it disappeared when I desynced. Overall we LOVE the game, though. We're having so much fun with it. Thanks for all your efforts!

inkognytoPlayed this weekend and ran into an sync/desync issue.
My brother created the game to friends, and I joined.
I'm uploading a lot at to the max. My max is just above what the game limits.
However something happens that get's us out of sync, he sees me 'freeze'. This happens while we were together and we stuck together (with him going first) so he's the primary host.
He's a programmer and from he can tell it needs a re-synch option. I can quit and come back and after everything updates it will be okay.
The worst part is I'm still sending data. Constantly and he's is watching and saying I am receiving NOTHING from you zero. You are running in place.
I think it's because my ISP has small drops a lot, I cannot stop it, IP stays the same, but it'll hiccup for a second. -

bradwe were having issues playing around early march, when our 4th friend would join, we would have severe desync issues, however it has been working good since patch 0.148.7 for us, no desync issues at all.

JoshCMe and my friend both have about 100ms ping to the server. I mostly notice heavy desync issues after using a portal, it takes like at least 10 seconds before I am able to interact with doors/chests etc. While sailing often for one of us the ship will apparently become a submarine and seem like its fully submerged below the waves even when the other person doesnt see this. Also a mayor annoyance is when exploring together and monsters target one of us, for the other player they seem extremely "laggy" and are very hard to hit, especially with arrows because their movement is very hard to predict with the choppy movements.
