Smelter not filling with ore

Our smelter was empty 0/10 ore, but full on charcoal. I attempted to load in coal, admittedly spam clicking E, and ended up eating my whole stack of copper in the process without the smelter registering any new coal.

Same thing happened to me, but we loaded 100 iron scrap into it.

Experiencing the same problem on multiplayer (not sure about single player). Restarting my client did not help.
