Significant lag while playing

I have significant lag while playing - to the point where the game is completely unplayable. I press A to move left, and the game reacts approximately 2-3 seconds later, it isn't instantaneous. Any movement (scenery, player anything) is staggered and not smooth as well which is extremely jarring. I cannot play on a multi-player server at all - others in the server didn't have this issue.
All my drivers are up to date and I have zero issues with other games on my system (running windows) - even games much much bigger than this.
