Can't place items with hammer

My friend joined my server and can't place items with the hammer. He right clicks to go in the building menu and left clicks the item he wants but when the building menu dissappears nothing happens. There is no item showing to place. We are close enough to the workbench and have enough resources. Tried verifying files and reinstalling and changing worlds but nothing helped.
