Pings should last forever or be able to be customized

When I ping, it goes away in about 10 seconds which is a little annoying as I often lose my bearings when out exploring. I also like to use the ping to tell my friends where to go but I often find I have to ping multiple times so they can follow easy.
Pings should last forever until a player reaches the ping location, or until the player cancels it themselves. Or make pings customizable in duration and possibly icon as well.
