Map resets on first profile when restarting computer and loading game on second steam profile.
When I play for a while and auto save (and even manually save with f5 console) I can quit the game and load it back up just fine. However when a second steam profile is logged into Valhiem, all worlds reset to a save from a while back, before the second profile logged in for the first time. Both my world and the other accounts.
This is extremely frustrating. I have already spent hours upon hours, like 20 hours redoing things and rebuilding things ive built twice before. This has happened consistently, no matter how I try to save. In hindsight, i should have manually backed up the world save file.

Smiffe AdminHi Christian,
Do you never get promted about "do you want to overwrite your existing files" when steam-cloud sync?
How do mean "when a second steam profile is logged into valheim" ? do you share account with someone? -
08 Apr, '21
LucasI also had my world reset 2 times, didn't know it was because of logging into another steam account but now it makes sense.
I also was manually saving with save on console and still lost progress even when trying to load the .old files from the world data folder, I stopped playing until they fix it, sadly. -

Christian CarrollHello Smiffe.
I do not share an account but I do share a PC. I never get prompted for anything. I did some more testing and it seems that when a second steam profile is logged into and loads up Valhiem, all worlds are overwritten with what that profile last closed with. I even deleted a couple worlds, and when the second account was logged in, the worlds were back. I verified that the files reappeared in the worlds folder in appdata. If only one account is used, nothing seems amiss, since it will save normally. As soon as the second account is logged into, it overwrites all worlds to how they were the last time that profile logged on.
Is there some kind of temp file location each steam profile saves worlds to in addition to the worlds folder in appdata? It seems like its writing to the worlds folder instead of reading. Not really sure how that would work, but something is bugged.
I found a workaround to manually back up the world files before swapping accounts. -

Smiffe Admin@Christian Carroll
There are a few things:
Steam cloud-saves files here --> https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=892970
Your world is saved in locally in --> C:\Users\ <username \AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim
So if you share computer, you should have diffrent world save folders.
do you share Steam account tho? That is what I suspect is the issue here at play. -
09 Apr, '21
Smiffe AdminYou can also disable Steam cloud-saves! and see if that workaround works.
Right click Valheim in steam --> propperties --> General tab --> unclick "Keep games saves in the steam cloud for valheim" -

Christian Carroll@Smiffe
We do not share an account, we have separate steam accounts which both own the game. However, the PC doesnt have separate users itself, just the one, so there is only the one save location for worlds.
Thank you, i will try that. -

Christian Carroll@Smiffe
Disabling cloud saves did NOT work. Same exact behavior as before.
When I log out of steam and log into the second account and load Valhiem, deleted worlds are back and the world saves are reset to what they were last time that profile logged in. Even without cloud saves enabled, and I even deleted the steam cloud file in the saves folder, so really not sure why this should be happening.
Thanks for working on this issue btw. -

SnarkieAlso have a similar issue to this, disabling steam cloud saves does not help if the two separate steam accounts are accessed on the same Windows user account. Maybe you guys can put a disclaimer to use different Windows user accounts if playing on the same computer. Such a shame as my world progress has been lost twice now and its really demotivating to play now.

Smiffe Admin@Christian Carroll
I tried it myself and BOTH accounts need to have steam cloud disabled.
I managed to reset a world in a point in time (not day 1) with having 1 account steam cloud enabled, and 1 account not having steam cloud enabled..
Steam cloud just promted me a small screen and said "tickets.." and then just didn't even ask me if I wanted to update files or not..
The main issue here is that you guys are playing from the same account on the computer. Game saves on C: and sync from the same folder. so if you guys would have used diffrent users on your computer. this wouldn't have happend (but you couldn't be able to play on the same world either, without copying the world file back and forth either... -

Christian Carroll@Smiffe
Thank you so much for looking into this.
I just verified that both accounts had steam cloud saves disabled, and the steam cloud file no longer appears in the worlds folder.
However, when logging in to the other account the worlds folder automatically and immediately overwrites the world saves and re adds the deleted one.
This happens without loading up the game, so now I am thinking it's possible it is a steam launcher issue. Not sure whats going on, but this is pretty brutal. It could still be a steam cloud issue but unchecking the boxes for it on both profiles didn't do anything.
I will try deleting the data from the cloud storage and comment if that works.
Still saving worlds by backing them up manually to a different folder.
Please update us if you find anything out. -

Christian CarrollLooks like the solution was to both uncheck save to cloud for Valhiem for both profiles AND delete the current local cloud backups for both profiles in:
C:\Program Files\Steam\userdata\<SteamID>\<AppID>
By deleting the folders there and the remotecache.vdf file, it wont overwrite the files anymore.
<steamID> represents a string of numbers which represents each steam profile. You have to do this for each profile which plays Valhiem.
<AppID> represents the app id for the game, which for Valhiem is 892970. -
12 Apr, '21
Smiffe AdminHm... wierd that you had to delete things in steam folder aswell.
Should just require for both users (or all users) who uses the family share to untick the box "use steam cloud" in the valheim client in steam -
12 Apr, '21
Christian CarrollYes true, but the deal is i think Steam automatically copies the files over upon starting steam, even if the game is set to not use the cloud. That could be solved if Steam changed to only copy the files if the cloud save setting is checked for the game. Not sure if yall can do anything about that though. Not sure how it affects the character info as we didnt seem to have problems there.
But yeah, this wouldnt be an issue under normal circumstances if we had different devices or pc user profiles -
13 Apr, '21
Smiffe Admin@Christian Carroll
Diffrent computers, and diffrent accounts on the same computer would solve the issue for you two.
Since the game saves worlds and characters in c:\users\ <logged in username> \
The issue is that steam don't ASK the user if the user wants to overwrite files, it just does it... :(
I tried it a few times yesterday and it just puts up a screen "tickets..." and just overwrote every single file I had in worlds and characters folders...
You are far from the only ones who share computers tho. Alot of people do.. But we will work on how we can solve this issue. I assume other games have in some way. -
13 Apr, '21
Guillaume DauphinaisI have the same issue moving from my gaming PC to my laptop... My laptop doesn't stay online 24/7 like my PC, so when I open my laptop I get a lot of "do you want to overwrite your existing files with newer Cloud ones" but not the other way around!!! When I'm watching TV and using my laptop to farm or explore, once I'm done, exit game and close the lid, 50% of the time it won't sync up to the cloud and I'll lose all my hours of cooking and fermenting. If I notice fast enough, I might have time to exist the game, go upstair, turn on laptop and force sync it before it overwritten. The save and upload to cloud should be part of the exit procedure and not just rely on your computer being on for longer then the game took to exit.

Snarkie@Smiffe @Christian Carroll
Thanks you both for looking in to this. Hopefully deleting the local cloud backups will ensure that the saves wont rollback. Will also manually backup the saves to be safe. Cheers! -

Christian@Smiffe
Thanks, and yeah I would assume that this isnt the first time this issue has come up. It's solved for now for us, hopefully yall can find a better solution for others. -

Smiffe Admin@Snarkie Stop the "cloud save" in steam library usually is all you need to do. (on all machines and accounts)

LisaHad an issue very similar to this:
My computer was logged into my partners steam account and I was able to access and play my world with my character, however when I logged back into my own account it obviously reset to a previous save. Using his steam cloud we recaptured my progress, but realized that the game had saved files I'm both my C drive steam folder and under my windows user folders. Finding and replacing the proper files so that the game would load the correct save took ages.
So if you have two steam accounts sharing one computer the files somehow get crossed resetting users to older worlds.
Also the issue of the game writing to different areas of the hard drive and his that interacts with the steam cliud. Save function. -
29 Apr, '21
Smiffe Admin@Lisa
Indeed. :(
No idea why steam cloud just overwrites files without even asking. It just does, with broken and/or rolled back worlds as result.
Stopping steam clouds everywhere is priority if you have:
*More than 1 user on the same computer
*Same user having multiple computers with steam account -

LuckI'm on my own (not shared) computer the world has been wiped/reset clean. This is quite frustrating.
I don't have steam cloud saves on.
I don't share this computer. -

Steve RoweI use only 1 account on steam but 2 different computers. Sometimes I have no issues. Say play on my laptop and the next day use my desktop and I get a choice to download save from the cloud. Then I go back to the laptop and download from the cloud only to find my ship gone, landscape back to how it was before alterations and enemy village partly destroyed back to normal. The thing is the map that was revealed stays revealed so some data has been saved and downloaded but not all the data. Also my grave has disappeared along with all my best equipment. Funny but the grave maker is still there. Any suggestions most welcome thanks. Best Regards Steve Rowe.

JohnI, too, had an issue of this type. I have tried the suggested fixes here and other places. My first attempt I tried replacing files to see if I could restore my world back to a previous state, seeing as how this didn't work I tried disabling the cloud saves. Disabling this did not fix the rolling back of my world, and so I tried deleting the 'remotecache.vdf' file, as well as the synced data. I attempted to purge all game data, uninstalled and deleted files in LocalLow, but steam managed to recover all data and set me back to Day 27, lol.
I may have bricked my world/game/characters. I will continue to try to progress in my world, this time removing the family sharing options and only using the one account that purchased Valheim. I will report back if this seems to work for me. -

Smiffe Admin@Luck do you have any anti-virus or something that prevents you from changing or updating files on C: ?
Only thing I could think of right now. -

AKEarlier this week I lost a base I built twice before I realised it had something to do with my PC being used with a different Steam account every now and then. Yesterday evening played some and died in the swamp. Called it a day. Returned to Valheim today and went to get my gear but there was nothing in the location. Nothing. I had all my important stuff on the character when death happened, including the Sunken Crypts key etc.
I guess the reason for this is that the PC was used with a different Steam account between Valheim session. This is so annoying I'm not going to waste my time time with the game for now. -

RobertI think I had a similar issue. I have a laptop and a gaming PC, same steam account, both with sync enabled.
A)Playing on my laptop, exited valheim as per normal.
B)Then played a few hours on my gaming PC from where I left off on my laptop, and eventually exited after mining a few hundred silver.
C)When I started playing on my laptop again I noticed it didn't load any progress from the gaming PC, so my progress was back at point A. So I quickly shut down valheim.
F) Loaded valheim on my gaming PC but that put me back at point A.
There's some weird situation where it loads the local saves and not the cloud saves, even if the cloud saves are newer.

Robert KMy son has an account in steam associated with my main account. If I make the mistake of launching Valheim while logged into my son's account, my own save files are overwritten. Having gone through this, once, after about 20 hours of building, I did not want it to happen again, so I began backing up the save files from here:
C:\Users\Robert\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate . Now, any time I make the mistake of starting with my son's account, I choose to close and do nothing. I go and get my saved file, backed up at the end of every play session from that folder ( path above ) and input my own save. Then, when I go to launch, from my own account, when asked, I choose the appropriate date of my own save, rather than having only the two last saves of my son's from way back. This works, but is a pain, and, ideally, our faithful developers can allow for separate world saves ( perhaps pegged to characters ) in some way that it would not be possible to lose hundreds of hours of work/play. -

matthewI logged into the same steam account on my laptop and pc and when i went to play on my laptop it reverted to a previous save then tried to go back on my pc and it was also lost on there.

AndorHello here,
Sadly I am experiencing this issue. Shared PC, 2 accounts.
Resolution: use your own custom save method, after EVERY closure of valheim. For me it's a powershell script to back up from now on until this is solved. I am not going to rebuild my half colosseum a THIRD time again, not mentioning the countless hours farming of materials to do so to keep my game un-cheated.
What I've seen (using other games in a similar manner) is that the game itself manages the account relevant files in a per account save directory. In this case it would look like:
C:\Users\<winaccname>\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\account1\XX
C:\Users\<winaccname>\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\account2\XX
XX = worlds, characters, etc.
To be frank I did not realized until now that this happens every single time if I start up Valheim with the "bad" account1. So be aware it will wipe everything.
I know priorities and votes, just sharing that when someone experiences such a bug, it may be a deal breaker. -

Smiffe AdminSadly alot of issues seems to be around Steam cloud saves not always working as intended. It's a "Your PC working / not working with Steam cloud saves correctly" :(
Disable steam cloud save if you can :(
Even if you don't have issues, disable it -

IskanderHi.
This happened to me as well.
Yesterday, I started Steam with my account and my copy of the game and started working on my map for hours.
Then my girlfriend started her steam account with her copy of the game and worked on her map.
Today, when I went back to my account, game and map, my map was overwritten with her savegame version of my map, erasing all the work I did during the weekend...
And no, it's not a "Your PC working / not working with Steam cloud saves correctly" because this has never happened before with any other game and we constantly swith accounts on the same computer. This is specifically related to Valheim and how it manages the Steam cloud sync and local profiles and savegames. -

IdaHave the same issue. I've been very happy with Valheim and how stable & playable it is for a game that's still in early access, but Steam overwriting save files means I just lost 170 days of progress in a world I was playing with my boyfriend.
My situation is similar to what's been mentioned here, my daughter decided to use her own Steam account on my PC to play Valheim this morning. I logged in game with my own account some hours later and my world was empty. I'm going to try to get around this bug by backing up all my games when I log out, and I also just created a new Windows user account for my daughter just for Valheim. We've turned off Steam cloud sync for now, but things get complicated here because she sometimes uses my boyfriend's notebook for gaming as well, and it'd be nice to have her process carry over... -

NetanelHey, is there any update on this one? Tried it and also tried deleting the steam cloud files as mentioned above but they somehow recover themselves even though steam cloud is disabled and map keeps on resetting D:
-
03 Jan, '22
Smiffe Admin@Netanel.
If is still happens. you need to disable in the steam library =)
Right click valheim in your steam library, Choose Properties, un-check in GENERAL where is says "[ ] Keep games saves in the steam cloud for Valheim"
So it is NOT active anymore. Then close the window.
Deleting those files doesn't help since steam will re-create them everytime :(
(and do stop steam cloud sync on every PC and account you share valheim on)
