Read here: "My dedicated/hosted server broke after patch."
The patch haven't broken your game/server. You need to have the same game version of the client, as you have on the server. Else it will detect a version missmatch and will disconnect you.
Uninstall any mods if they don't work for you and wait for updates. The vanilla dedicated server works fine in the tests we have done.

gczuczyI have no mods on my dedicated server. When I'm trying to update it, I'm getting the following error message:
Steam>app_update 8896660
ERROR! Failed to install app '8896660' (No subscription)
It's a vanilla install. Could you please tell me which do I need to remove to get the update working?
And yes, I've tried updating with an anonymous login, a separate-for-steamcmd steam account, and also using my main steam account which has valheim purchased, all giving the same error. Would be awesome to know which mod do I have to remove from this vanilla dedicated server to get the update working... -

BirchAfter updating my dedicated server, the connection is still lost. Did not change anything in firewall rules, and still https://geekstrom.de/valheim/check/ shows that my query ports are not available. Server starts normally, no messages in logs, no nothing...i've tried to troubleshoot it for 2 hours and failed, so any ideas?

ZorbHosted server (GTX Gaming)
No mods
Tried exsting world and a complete vanilla reinstall
Server and clients are all on the latest version (0.148.6)
Since patch everyone is being disconnected after anything between 30 seconds and 10 minutes with the same error message:

ArturoI updated my hosted server and my local copy of the game yesterday and since then I cannot connect to the server. Other players can still connect, but I cannot. After entering the server password the game loading screen shows up for a few seconds and then I get kicked back the character selection screen with a 'Disconnected' error message. I am running 0.148.6 on both.

MelgarhHi, I run vanilla server with ZERO mods and after running the update and updating the Dedicated start server batch file the server starts succesfully but it is not visible nor direct connection is not possible. It was working up until that moment, its dedicated server, no FW change, no Windows update. I've deleted the game directory on the dedicated server and re-run the entire update install from scratch, server starts no problem but still not visible anymore. The 2456/2457/2458 are both UDP and TCP allowed and correctly directed (Rust/Factorio/Valheim run for months just fine).
What information would help you to debug this?
It has also started disconnecting from the Game Server: https://imgur.com/psz9TH3 -

Chiron02My dedicated server hasn't worked since the patch yesterday. I've tried updating it multiple times. Every time I try to join I just get an "Incompatible Version" error. There's even articles out already that are reporting the servers aren't updating properly when you enter the app_update 896660 validate command, it validates but isn't updating. So they recommend making this update.bat file. But no matter what I've done I haven't gotten that update script to work and I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

Smiffe AdminQuestion to everyone with issues: Do you know the minimum requirements for your servers?
Atleast 4-8Gb RAM (the more RAM, the more users and world that is explored and how big your worldsave is. (100Mb or larger)
What CPU do you use? Intel® Core™ i3-4330T Processor or better would be recomended. -
25 Mar, '21
Smiffe AdminIf you join via the ingame server-list feature. and then you get disconnected after a while (1-10 minutes) Try to join through steam-serverlist or direct-IP join in the game client. This might help people with cheaper routers who dies from the ingame serverlist ping-replies.

Melgarh@Smiffe:
Dedicated O2 datacenter VM 6-core Intel Xeon, 12GB RAM, 150GB Gold-tier disc (SSD), 10Gbps internal LAN, 100Mbps Internet
I'm going to reinstall the entire game and run an entirely fresh world from the server. I'm using the anon account for steam to run the dedicated server - did you change anything on that part? -
25 Mar, '21
Smiffe Admin@melgarh.
Nothing should have changed on that part. -

MSUp to the latest patch 0148.6 everything worked fine. Since then no one could connect. The client versions are 0148.6. The server build is 6394774. No update available. It is no firewall problem, the incidence is definately due to the patch. We have no mods nor anti virus running. It's a linux game server running LGSM with several games. Only VH doesn't run, no connection possible.

Kristjan LuukSmiffe Admin
Question to everyone with issues: Do you know the minimum requirements for your servers?
So with that update minimum requirements went up? Atleast that would be only reason to ask that question. Since before that update all worked well with my server. And i know server work since my friend is playing on it. Just i cant log into it. And server is in my local network. -
25 Mar, '21
Smiffe Admin@Kristjan Luuk
The minimum requirements haven't gone up AFAIK. it's always been "3Ghz processor, 4-8Gb ram"
The information about the min-specs should be in the dedicated server FAQ files -

have you checked so your bat.file didn't reset or something? -

James PalaclopSO , since the last patch on dedicated server , every client get disconnected when the world is saving...There was no problems like this before and i made no change , the server is hosted by G-portal and are really good in quality so i dout it's an hardware problem , any idea ?

What you could test is to save the setup file you changed. "start_headless_server" file somewhere. And then verify all files in the steam library launcher until you get no errors. then re-apply the "start_headless_server file" again.
It might work :/ -
25 Mar, '21
Smiffe Admin@James Palaclop The new settings is ment to disconnect after a while when servers isn't responding. do you have a timer for how long it does take to save for your server?
I tried to quickly get a grip on the hardwave on a Valheim server on g-portal, but I couldn't find those details :/ -

Thomas RyanI have an odd one where I get one player that receives a disconnected message after inputting the password to the server I run (disposing socket error in logs), but myself and another player can connect fine. We could all connect just fine before the update. I am running the server on my PC with all server ports open, and I have an i9 10850k, with 64GB RAM! Firewall is set up correctly as well!

MS@Smiffe: Once again I am NOT on Windows, I have NO start_headlesser_server.bat. But I found the problem: CPU load now must have a lot of space. I cannot login when CPU load is higher than (aprox.) 80%. I stopped other services, have a CPU load under 50% and now it works. Jeez.

LuxI've been unable to log in since the patch. I can input the password for either dedicated server I play, but then get disconnected after the loading screen.
I have tried a complete and clean reinstall. There are no mods. The main server I play on has had files verified and has been rebooted. I have tried turning off cloud sync. Client and server are both up to date and on the correct version. The two friends I play with are able to log in on either server with no issues.
My laptop is a little older, and doesn't -quite- meet minimum requirements listed for the game, however it WAS playing decently up until the latest patch. I use an Alienware laptop, Windows 10, a 2.4 GHz quad core processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M, 8 GB RAM, with DirectX 11. As stated before, the game played okay until 0.148.6
My log, like others, has a no connection error. Specifically:

What kind of CPU do you have and RAM on your hosting computer?
That's a very good find from you. I will forward your findings! -

Smiffe Adminhi @Thomas Ryan
ZRpc timeout timer is set to 30 seconds. it's a new check if your not connected to the server, it will disconnect you to prevent server issues :/
Like things not saving, things dissapearing and such. -

So if someone takes longer than 30 seconds to load in it boots them out?
*Edit: If so, is there a way to change that so people with slower pcs could log in to the server? -

BrodieI have been having a similar issue. I'm hosting a NON-dedicated server that my friend and I have been playing on, hosted by me, for over a month. We tested without mods, fresh installs (and yes, I mean I deleted the actually files instead of just "Uninstalling from Steam"), tested to see if its a version mismatch (we both have the new update), port forwarded every port needed ( if i recall, the port local hosted servers use is default 27015, but needs 27016 as well cause of the +1). When she disconnects or I disconnect trying to connect to her (different world), the log says we connect, but timesout with "ZRPC Timeout". You say its a new check, but then isnt that the issue? If its new, then its causing problems, and needs to be looked at. If its really not the issue, and is instead detecting the reason, im more than willing to help you admins out with any more info I can provide.
-

RockySince patch on hosted dedicated server, we would get random disconnect icon on top left of screen. Sometimes it goes away and sometimes it will actually disconnect you. This happens whether I’m the only player on or multiple players are on. Trying to quickly log back on says disconnected. Waiting couple minutes can log back on.
-

MortyHey @Smiffe, thanks for your reply clarifying the ZRpc timeout. We have a friend who is running the game on an older laptop, who used to be able to play the game with us before this update though on lower fps, but now he just can't connect to the server due to timing out. We tried multiple fixes to find the cause and reading the server log and your message has clarified what the issue is. Is it possible to increase the timeout to a minute or have an alternate loading system which will allow my friend to connect. We really like the game and would like to play together.

Thomas Ryan@Smiffe
Thanks for your reply.
Is there any way to change this manually? -
26 Mar, '21
MS@ Smiffe: I installed a server from 2013 using vmware. This one has two old 2.4GHz Xeon CPUs. I copied the VM from out of the production server. Starting the VM with 1 CPU and 1 Core: No login possible. Then I added 2 CPU and all 16 Cores per CPU, no login problems all the time. It's obviously that CPU power is necessary for login (which is no good programming design at all since we are talking about handshaking).
P.S.: I am out here. Deleted all the VMs. I paid for a game with support which does not happen. Good luck ... -

val49I cannot connect to any server anymore (whether it is dedicated or local), like many other players. I can only connect to my world. It's impossible to play in multiplayer since the last patch. I also get this message : Failed to send data k_EResultNoConnection several times. All was working perfectly fine before the patch.

TrishHaving this issue on a standard server (not a dedicated server). Prior to patch, friend and I could play just fine. Since update, he cannot connect to any of my saved games (but I can connect to any of his). His game is up to date (we checked, and verified files). We've tried running the game as administrator, and different methods of joining the game, none of which are working. This patch has definitely broken the game for him.

Sam SI am getting a similar error to James Palaclop. It appears that whenever the world saves, everyone is disconnected. I'm using a i7 4770 with 8gb of ram and an SSD, all hosted on a personal dedicated machine. We encountered no issues prior to the most recent patch. Interestingly enough, after some testing I was able to play for three consecutive days in game without issues, but after I disconnected the server forze and I was unable to reconnect.

Do you connect via the ingame list?
Try to connect throught steam list instead and see if that helps you.

My dedicated server has a problem after the update. When i save the game via the console "save" i am immediately disconnected. HarmonyHaving same problem.
Running server on Linux.
Metal machine (not VM), everyone is connecting via local network.
We have tried connecting via in-game list as well as steam (steam does not acknowledge existence).
Everything is up to date and validated.
My computer (running same OS as server: Ubuntu-flavored Linux) is able to connect. The other player (running a windows 7 machine) is not able to.
Server has 16G ram and 6Ghz 8-core processor and 2TB of hdd.
Windows player has trouble connecting when I host off my personal machine as well.
Windows 7 machine can host, however, and I can join.
This implies to me it's a problem with the windows client (which takes a strangely long time to attempt to connect before getting discord.) -

LoganGame worked connecting via in-game server interface since EA launch. Many hours of no issues. NOW:
Just repeatedly get "disconnected" error. Player log always has the same lines, many many times about half way through the successful lead up:

03/24/2021 18:40:12: Failed to send data k_EResultNoConnection
I can create a game and start the server and my friend can connect to my game. I can run a game solo, no problem. However, EVERY time I try and connect to my friends world that I've been playing on for weeks, created by friend, prior to patch...I get "DISCONNECTED" error.
I've uninstalled/reinstalled/updated STEAM, uninstalled/reinstalled/updated VALHEIM, removed all extraneous commands in the boot up config and stream launch options, tried to connect directly via STEAM friends list "JOIN GAME," tried to connect via Steam server list, NOTHING works. Still get "disconnected." NEVER get in GAME. -

Our gameserver is Vanilla and hosted by HostHavoc (Intel Xeon E5-1650 v2 @ 3.50GHz, 1000Mbps).
On a side note: The comment in the original post "..vanilla dedicated server works fine in the tests we have done.", is unnecessary. Just because the server is working for you, doesnt mean there isnt a problem, and you should adress the issue instead of trying to shift the blame on your paying customers. -
31 Mar, '21
Smiffe Admin@Johan Sandström
You are totally right. I should not blame customers!
Shall ask our programmer to look at the ZRpc timer.
The timer should disconnect after 30 seconds. so if a save takes longer than 30 seconds, somethings could be wrong is out thought behind the timer being there.
What kind of disc does your server have?
Can you find out the write time it have for saving your world file? (and how big is your worldfile?) -

Johan SandströmThe databasefile (Luntertun.db) is 39MB, and the worldfile (Luntertun.fwl) is 45 bytes.
As for memory: I believe for Valheim it is uncapped to the server limits (60gb). I do not think it's remotely possible to get near that at this current time. -

-
01 Apr, '21
Smiffe Admin@Johan Sandström
How much is the RAM on your server?
Such a small worldfile shouldn't take more than 2-3 seconds to save :O
For how long does your dedicated server run at the time?
Was the issue always there for you? or did it gradually become worse? -
01 Apr, '21
Johan SandströmSmiffe, to speed things up a bit and to identify the issue properly; have the studio contact me directly if they want help identifying this defect. I run a very successful testing company, based in Stockholm, Sweden. We have already worked with studios such as Blizzard, Avalanche, Massive. Perhaps we can help you pro-bono - for this "first" defect - which obviously is having a rather forceful impact on its player base.

MatthewMe and my fiancé are having this issue as well. It is a LAN dedicated server (hosted from my computer) but only 2 of us connect to it. Currently have 32GB of RAM, Intel Core i5-7600 @ 3.8 GHZ processor. We are connected over WIFI, but it is a top end unit (Nighthawk R8000P). The issue happens sporadically. Sometimes she can play for hours without an issue, sometimes she has disconnects back to back. It appears to happen frequently when sailing or doing numerous inputs at once, but I'm not sure if that is limited to the issue.
My understanding of the issue is ZRpc timeout occurs because the server is looking for a ping back from the computer every second, and when for 30 seconds it does not receive a ping from the client, it will disconnect them. Increasing the ZRpc timeout in the DLL would likely just increase the time until the client disconnects. I will post server logs of a disconnect after this message. -

MatthewAnother update, the disconnect has occurred 4 times in the last hour, all while we were sailing together. On my end, the boat freezes up and stalls under the water until the other player completely DCs, then the boat remerges out of the water and takes moderate damage. This happened once when the serpent attacked us as well, and the serpent froze until the other client completely disconnected and began moving again (similar to the desync issue that occurred frequently last patch). On my fiance's end, she receives the lost connection symbol in the top left corner and none of her actions are registered. After 30 seconds, she is disconnected from the server.

JocraOK, here is new. I`ve figured out what was happened. I found it can be connected only after re-login my steam account.

valheim_praxisFor Logan and anyone on Windows with a "disconnected" error when trying to join a dedicated server that some folks are easily able to join but others aren't, and "Failed to send data k_EResultNoConnection" appears repeatedly in the Player.log
Check your power options at Control Panel -> Power Options. Mine was inadvertently set to Power Saver, and I was able to join after switching to High Performance. You may also need t add the following lines to the top of your boot.config file in the Valheim -> valheim_data directory:
gfx-enable-gfx-jobs=1
gfx-enable-native-gfx-jobs=1
This was after trying literally everything else over the course of a week, reinstallations, network resets, Steam client adjustments, etc. I suspect I got this disconnect issue after 148.6 because my GPU specs are pretty weak (AMD HD 7850) , but I cannot be sure. -

Ray Sandhu@Smiffe @Johan Sandström
I had the exact same error logs as @Johan Sandström and (being a dev) looking at the server and client logs it felt like a timeout issue. After reading these posts, I took the same action as @Johan Sandström and increased the timeout too 300 from 30 in the assembly_valheim.dll (took me a sec to figure out how). This worked immediately for my friend connecting from a slower computer. I have logs etc. and can fill in more info if needed or you can feel free to ping my email.
Thanks everyone, the game is amazing! -

RavenloftI'm running a dedicated server on a RPi4 (8GB overclocked to 2.15 GHz) running Windows on ARM, and have been for a couple months with no issues until the last patch, now every once in a while players will get the Server Ping / Disconnect flashing icon in the top left of the screen. I may not be meeting the minimum requirements, but it was running just fine previously.

David SwiftI am getting the Incompatible error when trying to play my dedicated server. I have updated both the server (Ubuntu) and the game (Windows 10) and still can't play the game. Any suggestions?
Server build: app 896660, build 6437354
Game build: app 892970, build 6437353
uninstalled/reinstalled game (win) no luck.
p.s. have several hours in-game with this set up so it's a working setup before updates. -

Smiffe Admin@Johan Sandström
And if your play-buddies join your local hosted world with the ingame settings? -
07 Apr, '21
Smiffe Admin@Ravenloft
it could have been yes.
About 3Ghz processor, 8Gb Ram is what you need for a world after a while -

Smiffe Admin@David Swift
The same game versions on both client and server? Only thing I could see that would trigger that response :/ -
07 Apr, '21
Ray Sandhu@Smiffe I had the same thing as Johan. I could play the world file locally but a friend on a "slower" computer could not connect to my dedicated server until I up'ed the m_timeout in ZRPC. The same friend also could not connect to the same world if I played it as a locally hosted world.
However, I did have a second friend who could connect to both instances (nicer computer). -

Johan Sandström@Smiffe playing locally on my personal hosted environment works like a charm (even together with 9 other players).
The Timeout issue occurs only when using a hosted environment (such as HostHavoc).. had to cancel the subscription we had with HostHavoc due to this. Shame, they have some nice specs in their servers. -

Smiffe Admin@Johan Sandström
I wonder if the issue was the hosting company doesn't give you enough RAM (for example) to run Valheim reliably? I took at look, and I couldn't find anywhere where they told me how much RAM I would get :/
What are your specs on your own hosted server?
about 3GHz, 8Gb ram? or better? -
09 Apr, '21
Smiffe Admin@Ray Sandhu
Do you have the specs of your 2 friends computers?
and perhaps what kind of NAT connection? and what kind of internet connection overall? (wifi or 3G, 4G, 5G modems are specially interesting to know if they use) -

QuirkyStreet4288Help me.. valheim Network problem...Icons appear at certain intervals. few 10 minute or 30 minute or 50 minute. and Server disconnected..
I suspect I got this disconnect issue after 148.6 because my GPU specs are pretty weak (Intel(R) HD Graphics) , but I cannot be sure.
server Connection type: play locally
player computer connection type: WIFI ( I using Modem)

QuirkyStreet4288I managed to fix the ZRpc issue on my own, by changing the class m_timeout, from 30 seconds to 300 (in the file assembly_valheim.dll).
Now the game works again. -

BauxerHave had the disconnect issue since the last patch, something changed in it that is causing it for everyone on a hosted box. Its not a local issue since everyone in the hosted environment gets disconnected at the same time. My PC specs are above and beyond the minimum requirements, also hard wired in so not a connection issue. If it were a connection issue then it would be very coincidental that every time everyone on the hosted environment gets disconnected at the same time that they have the same exact issue with different ISPs and connection types...Seen some indicating that its during world saving on server side and closing the sockets for everyone that is connected. Cant even play the game how its supposed to be played because I dont dare get in a boat and get disconnected and then it spawns me back in off the boat and I drown... Please fix so we can actually play for more than 10 min...

How long does it take for your server to save when it saves?
And what CPU, GPU, RAM do you have in it?
Network type? -
12 Apr, '21
Smiffe Admin@Bauxer,
We are looking into these issues all the time. Trying to find why it behaves like this for some players, but not the majority of players..
Why some are very prone to these kinds of issues and how it happens. (looking at code while things save, network issues and so on) -

KosanderFor what it's worth; I had the Disconnected error if I tried to connect to a dedicated server. Private world was ok, and a friend could also join in my world.
For some reason I had the power saving power plan turned on, switching it to balanced allowed me to access the game and also gave me a loads better fps -

ZenonI've been pretty consistently getting the ZRpc error on my dedicated server over the past couple of weeks - every day I try to log in, it will happen at least once, often will happen 5+ times in a row. I'm happy to let the devs test anything on my server if it will help fix it - I've got ssh access, installed it via LinuxGSM (https://linuxgsm.com/lgsm/vhserver/) - For me right now the server is unplayable, so I would gladly take time to do whatever it takes to try and fix this. Please let me know!

Smiffe Admin@QuirkyStreet4288
Well. we do recommend 8Gb ram and about 3Ghz processor as host for a dedicated server.
Your wifi connection might also add to some slowdown issues incase it isn't the strongest connection (tho I assume you don't have a bunch of broken packages)
When the world is small, 4Gb ram usually works just fine. But as more and more things are added, and the instances get higher. the data being sent back and forth between clients and server quickly fill up your RAM, which gives you the 1minute (and worse) save timer :( -

JonathanI had a related issue, after patch, after playing a session on a dedicated server with 1 friend, the game reloaded at the start of the previous session rather than at the end of it. We had to build the same house three times. Last time we played the house was actually there, so maybe (i hope) this is now fixed.
Thanks for a great game (when it works ) -

Hey,
since last night we have also the same problem with disconnects (ZRpc timeout). The Valheim-Server runs on a Root-Server with 8GB Ram (5.2 in use with running Server) and a 4x3,4gHz CPU hostet by Zap-Hosting an knowing company in the gaming scene.
Please take a look into it and fix the problem. at the moment we cant play further more on the server.
Best regards. -

Leon Straathof@Smiffe We also tested the stability of the internet connection over prolonged period, on the client side we ended up with just 0,04% packet loss which is extreme low for a home internet connection. At the server side it was even better. I start to wonder when developing the server part did they ever test it with a traffic shaper?? Every dev who works on client server things should know they have to do that.

HupfiDupfiG'day! First: Great job! I know, you have a lot of work, and you will improve the game in the future. But....You guys changed something with how connections work after 146.11, till then, my sisters and I could play in the same room: Host, Join, Perfect! So simple! No dedicated server needed and all that... since Version 147/148/150, we couldn't find each others hosted games, even if my monitoring software says, our connection is perfect. We loved the game... for now, we "depatched" it to version 146.11, now it works again. We will have to improve the game only using mods. Maybe there will be a connection option to choose from or something. I'm sure, you will find a solution. Keep the good work up! Thumbs up! :-)

BrianJensenTo fix Incompatible version.
You can either install SteamCMD OR Uninstall the server and reinstall it.
Copy the bat file you use to launch the server somewhere safe. Uninstall server, Reinstall server, copy bat file back to location.
Uninstalling the server does not remove save state data. It's safe to uninstall it. -

The_finDid you try to fix the dedicated server via steam? I did it with number 2 on this list:
https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/solved-valheim-server-disconnected-error/#fix6
But still we get almost everytime kicked of the server if it is saving the world. -

MikeyM3thodic4lHaving a weird issue here where the dedicated server ran fine without issues for a week or so then am now having "Got status changed msg k_ESteamNetworkingConnectionState_None" issues where everyone in the server lags out simultaneously. No hardware/network changes, have tried everything I can reset/reinstall/update/verfiy etc. Seems to just happen pretty consistently after an amount of time after we reset it and get back on it.
Honestly just feel like I'm beating my head on the wall over this checking and trying everything at this point. I've seen it mentioned here in other posts with no real resolution it seems like as well. -

JP McGloneI was having all of these issues over wi-fi. Since upgrading to having my local machine (running the dedicated server) and my wife's machine to being wired in, we've had no disconnects.
I don't know why that would be, but it might be a fix for some of you, too. -
31 May, '21
thehemmoif you get
- Bad thread localsrc/tier1/fileio.cpp (4975) : Assertion Failed: CFileWriterThread already exited
there seems to be instance already running so it needs to be killed. at least that was my case -

GormigustSince the latest patch still mentions nothing of the problem, I will upvote this again. A friend of us (nearly) always cannot connect to the game server (both stand-alone dedicated server on a seperate PC and via friends-game option in game). Error messages is the dreaded "zrpc timeout". He might be lucky and get on after a lot of tries, and then rarely gets disconnected anymore - so this is only an issue on startup.
We tried what we could (disabled virus protection, disabled firewall, repaired game, reinstalled game, killed all other processes (except discord), started server on different machines, server connected via Wifi and Ethernet, router priorisation of traffic) ... nothing helped. Please take a look at this issue, it takes the fun out of the game for all of us if one of us can't join.
His processor is rather slow, but he has no problems playing the game - so my guess would be that the game does something time consuming in parallel to connecting, causing the server to timeout. -

RSoulsFor those of you that say they have fixed it by modifying the .dll - Please share your findings on how to modify the file- in detail.

Smiffe AdminThis issue is usually due to mods on either side when you encounter it, and you have the same version number.
